Ransomware Attacks Decline by 11% in 2023 – February 21st

IBM X-Force released a report, disclosing that ransomware attacks declined by 11.5% in 2023, compared to 2022.  IBM says the decline in ransomware attacks is largely due to the new cybercrime focus of infostealing tactics which rose by 32%. IBM X-Force's report gathered data for the report based on 150 billion daily security events from 130 countries last year.

‘Predatory Sparrow’ Cyberattack Shuts Down 70% of Iran’s Gas Stations – December 19th

Threat actor group Gonjeshke Darande, which translates to “Predatory Sparrow” claimed the cyberattacks against Iranian petrol stations, rail networks, and steel factories, according to Iranian State Media. 'Predatory Sparrow', speculated to be linked to Israel, explains the attack to be in response to "the aggression of the Islamic Republic and its proxies in the region".

Cloud security compromised by constant upgrades

There is mounting evidence that companies may have been naive in accepting Big Tech’s optimistic assurances that sensitive data can be stored more securely in the cloud than on the company’s own servers.  In its latest Attack Surface Threat report, Silicon Valley-based cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks reveals that the cloud has now become “the dominant attack surface”, with four out of five security vulnerabilities observed in organizations across all sectors coming from a cloud environment.

BlackCat sharpens its claws

Cybersecurity firm Coalfire reports that the ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware gang has been causing mayhem over the past year using a failsafe delivery system. The group suspects that the leaders of BlackCat are affiliated with the top ransomware gang, the infamous LockBit.
