Weak cyber M&A activity shows significant slowdown – August 21st

Cyber startup M&A on pace for weakest year since 2017

Crunchbase News reported that “The first seven months of the year saw only 34 cyber startups get acquired,” compared to a high of 123  in 2021 and a significantly reduced 82 last year. Rising interest rates and geopolitical tensions that have already hit the tech sector hard are now clearly putting a damper on M&A activity in cyber.

ALPHV/BlackCat adds Seiko to its list of victims

On the 21st BlackCat published data samples from Seiko that were obtained from a breach of the company’s servers at the end of May. The data is purported to include production plans, new model release plans, passport information, watch designs, and more. Seiko has yet to comment on the claims, but this breach further bolsters ALPHV/BlackCat’s credentials and claims that it is linked to another notorious hacking group.
