Popular hosting service proves less than “bulletproof” – August 11th

Hackers impersonate city’s COO

The city of New Haven, Connecticut, reportedly lost more than $ 6 million during a recent spate of multiple cyberattacks. These attacks were targeted at its public school district, with hackers impersonating private vendors and the city’s Chief Operating Officer in emails. 

Panasonic commits to strengthening device security

Manufacturer Panasonic has stepped up against cybersecurity threats. Reports from WIRED have said the company’s researchers are now using internet-connected appliances as ‘honeypots’ to lure real-world attackers, to capture current strains of malware and analyze them. This commitment to enforce cybersecurity measures across its products was stated at the recent Black Hat conference in Las Vegas.

Polish bulletproof hosting is taken down

The Polish Central Cybercrime Bureau took action against popular bulletproof host [its services were offered while turning a blind eye to usage] LolekHosted.net, and five of its administrators were arrested. The site was used to facilitate information-stealing malware, launching DDoS attacks, fraudulent online shops, Botnet server management, and more.
