Panel To Advise on International AI Governance, Appointed by UN

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday, announced the appointment of a 39-member global advisory panel to report on international governance of AI, its risks, challenges, and opportunities.

The panel is composed of experts from the government, private sector, research community, civil society, and academia.

 

Google’s Vulnerability Rewards Program (VRP) Expansion

Google’s Vulnerability Rewards Program (VRP), a program made to reward researchers who find system vulnerabilities, has been expanded for generative AI.

Google explained the expansion of the VRP as a reaction to the risks brought by AI, and the magnified implications it has for traditional digital security.

 

Octo Tempest Among ‘Most Dangerous’ Financial Hacking Groups

Microsoft has published a profile of Octo Tempest, an English-native threat actor group established in 2022.

Detailed on the Microsoft profile, Octo Tempest, one of the “Most Dangerous” groups specializes in advanced social engineering tactics for data extortion and financially motivated ransomware attacks. They are also reported to be the first English-native threat actor group to partner with a Russian-affiliated hacking group, ALPHV/BlackCat.

Criminal use of AI enters new and dangerous phase

Cybercriminals have just added what may be the most dangerous weapon yet to their arsenal of illegal software, a Dark Web version of legitimate artificial intelligence (AI) platforms. Tel Aviv-based network security company, Cato Networks, has uncovered an emerging criminal platform called Nytheon AI that it says is “a fully-fledged illicit AI platform”. While there have been other attempts to offer criminal versions of popular AI models, Nytheon AI is the first truly comprehensive multilingual offering. Threat actors can now use the platform to conduct a variety of attacks including tailored spear-phishing campaigns, deepfake documents, and polymorphic malware capable of constantly mutating its appearance.
