19 Individuals Behind Dark Web Marketplace Arrested
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that 19 individuals worldwide were arrested in connection to the now-defunct “XDecic” dark web marketplace.
The DOJ stated as part of their announcement that the dark web marketplace facilitated an estimated $68M in total cyber fraud, with the marketplace having a crucial role in the sale of servers used for tax fraud and ransomware attacks.
North Korea Stole an Estimated $600M in Crypto in 2023
According to TRM Labs, state-sponsored North Korean threat actors were behind almost 1/3rd of all cryptocurrency heists last year, amounting to an estimated $600M worth of crypto stolen.
Despite a dip in cryptocurrency theft compared to 2022, North Korean hackers continue to display evolving social engineering tactics to infiltrate victims’ blockchain wallets.
Cyberattack Shuts Down loanDepot IT Systems
In response to complaints regarding its payment portal, loanDepot informed its customers that they fell victim to a cyberattack that shut down its IT systems, disrupting its business operations.
Currently in coordination with law enforcement and forensics experts to further investigate the attack. The attack on loanDepot marks the second major cyberattack on a US mortgage loan provider in the past few months, after the cyberattack on Mr. Cooper.
