Chinese Hackers Using ORB Networks to Evade Detection

Mandiant revealed that Chinese-linked state-backed hackers rely on operational relay box (ORBs) network proxy meshes to avoid detection for cyber espionage campaigns.

For example, Mandiant pointed out that these advanced persistent threat actors (APTs) used ORBs for the ‘SPACEHOP’ critical vulnerability campaign earlier this year.

 

New Advanced Persistent Threat Group Discovered

Bitdefender Labs discovered the activities of a new advanced persistent threat (APT) group, now dubbed as “Unfading Sea Haze.” The group has been targeting countries surrounding the South China Sea, surrounding China.

These countries, including Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and Vietnam, have been hit by the APT group, seemingly specifically targeting high-level organizations, military and government organizations.

 

93% of Organizations Rethink Cyber Strategy after New Rules

Swimlane’s report unveiled that 93% of organizations re-evaluated cybersecurity strategies in the past year due to newly implemented cyber regulations in the US and UK.

The report also found that 58% admit that their organization considered a full revision of their cyber strategy due to new cyber regulations.

Over half of cyber-attacks are state-sponsored

Over half of cyber-attacks exploiting known vulnerabilities are the work of state-sponsored groups from abroad, mainly from China. According to cybersecurity company Recorded Future’s research arm, Insikt Group, 53 percent of observed exploitation activity in the first half of this year was driven by state-sponsored and suspected state-sponsored actors and conducted for espionage, surveillance, or other geopolitical objectives.
