‘Booby-trapped’ app cons users to allow for remote control
Visitors to a download site, freedownloadmanager.org, might have fallen victim to a malicious malware scam.
According to reports, starting in 2020 the domain at times redirected visitors to a malicious domain, deb.fdmpkg.org. This booby-trapped version of the app then used a ‘backdoor’ to provide threat actors remote control of the infected device.
Asia’s power grid target by threat actors
A malicious malware attack targeting Asia’s power grid has been reported.
Called ShadowPad or PoisonPlug the malware allows for credential theft. Reports allege the malware to be the work of novel threat operation RedFly.
750 cases of Android malware-related cases report
The Singapore Police has reported more than 750 cases of Android device malware attacks in the first half of 2023. Of these, 11 have involved the unauthorized withdrawal of Central Provident Fund (CPF) savings.
The total stolen through these scams is estimated at S$10 million (US$7.35 million).
