Cyber slowdown and major companies announce layoffs – August 17th

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has made 10 arrests connected with recent malware attacks that resulted in the emptying of victims’ bank accounts. The youngest of those arrested is just 16 years old.

New cybersecurity policies raise fears of democracy threat

Digital and democratic rights have come into the spotlight in Nepal following concerns raised over a new policy by the National Cyber Security Police (NCSP) which calls for centralized filtering of all incoming and outgoing internet traffic. Kathmandu Post reports that while multiple stakeholders have welcomed the policy due to a rise in cyber attacks, critics say it undermines their freedoms. Notably, China uses its national firewall to monitor and filter out unwanted content.

According to the Wall Street Journal, a trio of major cyber companies announced layoffs, further highlighting a slowdown in the sector, which though resilient, is starting to feel the impact of a wider downturn. Rapid 7, a Boston-based company, announced layoffs affecting 400 people, while Atlanta’s Secureworks cut 300, and Dragos let go of 50.
