26 Billion Stolen Record Database Discovered
Security Discovery researchers and the Cybernews team discovered the largest data leak ever recorded, containing 26 billion records predominantly stolen from major social media platforms and government agencies.
Dubbed “The Mother of All Breaches”, the 12 terabytes of compromised records were stolen most notably from Tencent QQ (1.5B), Weibo (504M), MySpace (360M), Twitter (281M), LinkedIn (251M), AdultFriendFinder (220M), among government agency data from the United States, Brazil, Germany, the Philippines, Turkey, among others.
Russian Hacker Behind Medibank Attack Sanctioned by US, UK, and Australia
According to a TechCrunch report, the United States and United Kingdom governments imposed sanctions on the Russian hacker, Alexander Ermakov currently detained in Australia.
Ermakov is believed to be associated with the REvil Russian hacking group and played a pivotal role in the Medibank ransomware attack that exposed 9.7M patient data in 2022. The Australian case could see Ermakov face at least 10 years in prison, with heavy fines for his cybercrimes.
Identity-Based Incidents Increased by 144%
According to a report by Expel, identity-based incidents accounted for 64% of all incidents investigated as disclosed in the report, showing a 144% increase from 2022 to 2023.
The Expel report correlates the rise in identity-based incidents to the rise in cloud infrastructure incidents, resulting in exposed credentials. The report also revealed that 96% of cloud infrastructure incidents impacted Amazon Web Services (AWS).
